Gender Reveal 101 | Dallas Maternity Photographer

If you're a mom of young children or know a least one mom that's been pregnant in the last 5-7 years then you probably know about the latest little trend known as a Gender Reveal. As a mom, and a Maternity Photographer in Dallas I have been both behind and in front of the camera for one of these things and I stand firm on my profession that they are SO. MUCH. FUN.

Gender Reveals have morphed over the years and there are so many great ideas out there for how to do a reveal. I've seen some seriously creative people come up with some fun ways to announce the gender of their newest little love. But how do you know which ones are going to be fun crowd pleasers and which ones are guaranteed to land you on a youtube "bloopers" reel?

Here are my top tips for having an awesome reveal that will absolutely have that WOW factor!

  1. Find out when everyone else does!
This one can be tricky-and I don't recommend it for everyone. Lets be real for a sec...sometimes a mom or dad is really holding out for that girl after 4 boys in a row, or vice versa...whatever the reason may be (and I don't judge!) if you're crossing your fingers and hoping for a certain gender, this one isn't for you! BUT-if you're sure that it makes absolutely no difference to you-I totally recommend having your sonographer keep the results a secret, seal them up and get that envelope into safe and trusted hands asap. Being surprised at the party is really exciting and so much fun!

  2. Keep the actual reveal part simple and obvious
If you want that big "a-ha!" moment, I absolutely recommend keeping the reveal itself (the actual part where everyone finds out) very simple, and very obvious. Sometimes getting super creative also equals overly confusing. To avoid that, You and your husband should be the ones to REVEAL the information. Let every eye be on the surprise (whether it's cutting a cake, opening a box of balloons, popping a piñata etc...). It's so awesome to have a room full of quiet eyes watching and waiting for that big moment-I really don't think you'll regret having everyone erupt with laughter and excitement all at once. It's such a thrill!

  3. Document the occasion!

Make sure you have someone in charge of pictures and video. This is something you will LOVE looking back on (probably even more than your baby shower) and your kids will ask to see the pictures and video over and over again. Trust me on this one.

BONUS TIP: If parties aren't your thing but you want the fun of a Gender Reveal, keep it private and hire a photographer! You can find out with your significant other (and your older kids if you have them) in a fun way and then share them on social media when you're ready to announce it.
